ARC Advisory on Yacht and Boat Donations
Considering a Boat Donation?
Donating a vessel can be meaningful, but most nonprofits decline more boats than they accept due to cost, condition, and logistics.
Veteran Yacht Sales provides objective, advisory-first guidance and works with a curated network of donor partners that have demonstrated real-world impact.
Before committing, we help determine whether donation is appropriate or whether a sale or trade-in better serves your goals.
Facts
Donating a boat can be a meaningful way to support a cause while simplifying ownership transitions. However, vessel donations involve legal, logistical, and tax considerations that differ from other charitable gifts. This framework outlines how the process typically works and what owners should evaluate before proceeding.
1. Start with Eligibility & FitNot all boats are suitable for donation.
Charities must determine whether a vessel:
-
Can be used directly in their programs, or
-
Can be sold economically to support their mission.
We will typically review:
-
Make, model, year, and length
-
Location
-
Condition (operational vs. project)
-
Ownership status (clear title, no liens)
-
Estimated market value
Important: Nonprofits turn away more boat donations than they accept. Storage, transport, repair, and disposal costs often exceed a boat’s usable or resale value. A charity must be confident that accepting the vessel will advance rather than burden their mission.
2. Acceptance & TermsIf the charity determines the boat is viable, they will confirm:
-
Whether they intend to use the vessel or sell it
-
How title or documentation will be transferred
-
Who is responsible for transport, haul-out, or delivery
-
Whether any pre-existing fees or obligations must be resolved
Acceptance is never automatic, even for well-maintained vessels.
3. Transfer of OwnershipOnce accepted, ownership is formally transferred:
-
State-titled vessels: Title is signed over to the nonprofit.
-
USCG-documented vessels: A bill of sale and documentation transfer is executed.
After transfer:
-
The donor is no longer legally responsible for the vessel.
-
Insurance, moorage, and liability shift to the charity.
Following transfer, the nonprofit may:
-
Place the boat into service for program use, or
-
Sell the vessel and apply proceeds to its mission.
Donors should understand that they typically do not retain control over how the boat is ultimately used.
5. Tax Treatment & Documentation:Tax deductibility depends on how the charity uses the vessel:
If the Charity Sells the Boat
-
The donor receives IRS Form 1098-C.
-
The deduction is generally limited to the actual sale price, not an estimated market value.
If the Charity Keeps and Uses the Boat
- Best deductions come from charity use of vessel not under sale terms as in our charity auction sales that will dramatically reduce overall deduction.
-
The donor may be eligible to deduct the fair market value, subject to IRS rules and appraisal requirements.
Additional considerations:
-
Deductions require itemization.
-
Higher-value vessels may require a qualified appraisal.
-
Donors should consult their CPA or tax advisor.
Before pursuing a donation, owners should confirm:
-
The vessel has clear title and no outstanding liens.
-
There are no unpaid slip fees, storage charges, or yard bills.
-
The boat can be delivered or transported at reasonable cost.
Most charities will decline boats with unresolved financial or logistical issues.
When Donation Makes SenseDonation may be appropriate when:
-
The vessel has limited private-sale appeal but remains usable or resalable.
-
The owner prioritizes impact and mission over maximizing proceeds.
-
The tax benefit, reduced transaction complexity, and social value align with the owner’s objectives.
It may be less suitable when:
-
The boat requires significant repair or disposal expense.
-
The owner’s primary goal is financial return.
-
Market demand supports a clean private-party sale.
Angel Rescue Corporation, we approach charitable donation with the same discipline we apply to Federal requirements. Because nonprofits must carefully consider risk and cost, many vessels are declined, even when well-intended.
To help clients navigate this responsibly, we maintain a curated network of donor partner organizations that have demonstrated:
-
Operational integrity in accepting and transferring vessels
-
Transparent handling of donated assets
-
Measurable, real-world impact on the communities they serve
When donation is appropriate, we guide clients toward proper options turning assets into meaningful outcomes for people’s lives.

Why Donate a Boat
with angel Rescue Corporation?
☆ Free Boat Towing Anywhere in the United States! ☆
☆ Tax Benefits usually outweigh trying to sell the boat yourself ☆
☆ NO Middleman! Donate Directly to our 501c3 charity! All Proceeds benefit those in need ☆
☆ We accept most boat donations offered, running or not! ☆
When you donate boats to Boats with Causes you are helping yourself as well as many people throughout the United States. You will receive a generous Tax write off and Boats with Causes will do all of the work. Our team of volunteers will pick up your boat donation anywhere in the United States even if you no longer have a title. Plus since we are the actual charity, you get to feel confident your donation is going directly to those that need it most rather than some middleman who takes up to 80% of the profits themselves before giving any to charity.
Having trouble trying to sell your boat by yourself? One of the main reasons people decide to donate their boat with us is because they are tired of trying to sell the boat themselves. As we all know, BOAT stands for “Break” “Out” “Another” Thousand” and any boat owner knows this is true. Unless, you have a storage facility on your property, you have to pay to have the boat stored during every season, whether you use it or not.
With rising gas prices, many are starting to not even use their boats for recreational activities which means their boat just sits there and starts to lose value. The next step is trying to sell the boat which means more money out of your pocket and wasted time. Placing expensive classified ads to sell your used boat and then getting phone calls at midnight and speaking with dreamers just causes more frustration than is deserved.
Donating is extremely fast & simple with our team.
